Union of the carefree (Unie der zorgelozen)
In the first place The Union makes theater. A recognisable, folk theater that is addicted to everyday life and the struggle of the little man who transforms the world around him in universal and unpolished folk tales.
However the Union is more than just theater. There is also writing, drawing, filming, photographing, making music, working with glass and textile and so on. There is no artistic discipline The Union is not familiar with. This work finds its place in and around the performances, in the half-yearly magazine ‘The Gazette’ and in several other projects. Fusing together all these different methods into a unique artistic language. A language that is quick and witty, but also slowed down and poetic. Bold, but tender.
I wanted to reactivate the original function of the Scala as a festive gathering place and cultural centre. The main purpose was to build a place where people and artists can meet, with no obstacle to participate, where one is working on a sustainable and creative society. A house where every participant or spectator his smart, playful or spit distinctive voice is heard. A house that criticism, humour and action automatically embeds in its daily operation.
The project consisted of two distinct parts: on one hand the establishment of a renovation project and on the other hand in the renovated multipurpose hall, where there is a temporary exhibition on a chosen creative designer.
I designed a flexible kit for all areas of the interior. A system based on a grid that is redeemable and flexible in its use. The base consists of building blocks of steel and wood, a recognisable concept, but through its mortis and tenon joint innovative. Stage elevations, walls, counter, seats, flower totes all in this kit.
I strived for pure functionality, allowing creativity to be stimulated. Everyone of the Union will make its own cube and put in something that he or she is missing from the past, or if someone is interested in working with glassware, ceramics or paint and in this way give the overall design note form.
