BIO
Sander Nevejans (b. 1990, Ghent, Belgium) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in material research and the reinterpretation of traditional craft. With a foundation in metalworking and electro-mechanical engineering, and a Bachelor’s in Fine Art from LUCA School of Arts, Nevejans navigates the space between industrial process and artistic form.
Now based in Glasgow, he works under the studio name Sane, where his sculptural and design-based works explore the expressive potential of natural materials, particularly byssus, the silk-like threads secreted by mussels. His recent body of work investigates byssus not only as a eco-friendly resource but as a cultural artefact tied to forgotten heritage, marine ecosystems, and the legacy of European craftsmanship.
Nevejans’ work sits at the intersection of functionality, sculpture, sound, and material ecology. Through site-specific installations, limited editions, and prototypes, he engages with themes of environmental temporality, silence, and transformation. His pieces are tactile and meditative, embodying a minimal aesthetic that invites close attention to surface, form, and substance.
Sander became a member of The King’s Foundation 35 under 35 network (link) for his work with Scottish mussel beards (Byssus), represent the change His Majesty wants to see in the world.
